When sugar was rare, subtleties were lavish sculptural treats constructed from sugar and reserved solely for the aristocracy to consume. Subtleties might take the form of anything from a ornate sailboat, to a majestic stag, to a castle surrounded by gardens. As sugar became more accessible, the allure of the subtlety lessened. However, their legacies can still be observed today in the custom of ornate wedding cakes and desserts. The Cake Box is a peek back at this tradition but also functions as a teaser for the decadence of The Golden Grotto.
