Houston, Texas, is an epicenter of Chicano culture. At the foundation of Chicano art are lowrider cars, graffiti, and murals. Hecho en Tejas pays homage to the neighborhoods that are filled with vibrant color, art, and culture yet are constantly underrepresented. Barrios like this are so often filled with marginalized communities who are displaced due to gentrification and I want Hecho en Tejas to be a safe space. I want this room to be a safe space for people who don’t always see the value of what their identity can bring to the table. When people enter the barrio I want them to be able to relate to the space and see themselves reflected in such a cool place like Meow Wolf. In many situations the people of Hecho en Tejas are not pushed to pursue art, but upon entering el barrio I want them to realize that art and color is inherently an extension of who they are.
